The Pathologising of Passion: Why Deep Interest Trumps The Culture of Resentment

If you have ever lost hours diving into the meticulous history of ancient coinage, the complex mechanics of quantum computing, or the precise taxonomy of deep-sea fungi, congratulations. By the standards of modern psychological classification, you display qualities that may be classified as, "divergent". Your deep, focused pursuit of expertise—your, "special interest"—is often viewed through a diagnostic lens, typically associated with the autistic experience. But let us pause and consider the absurdity of this cultural framing. When did the passionate pursuit of knowledge, the deep dive into complexity, become something that required a clinical explanation? The truth is, if checking things out and learning about things is deemed so divergent, it is at least demonstrably better than its opposite: the deep, corrosive resentment aimed at things that are intelligently established. The Divergent Engine of Expertise A special interest is not merely a hobby; it is ...

Vaping Safety Alert: Damaged Batteries and Chargers Pose a Serious Fire Risk

A growing concern is emerging within the vaping community regarding the safety of vape mods and chargers, particularly those that damage or compromise the integrity of high-powered batteries like 18650s. Reports are surfacing of devices and chargers that are physically scuffing, burning, or otherwise damaging batteries and mods, leading to a significant risk of fire.

If you're a vaper using devices powered by removable batteries, it's crucial to be vigilant and aware of the potential hazards. Damaged batteries can spark, smoke, and even erupt in flames, posing a serious threat to personal safety and property.

Identifying the Problem

The issue stems from poorly designed or manufactured vape mods and chargers that physically damage the batteries during insertion, removal, or charging. This can manifest in several ways:

Scuffing and Scratches: Visible marks on the battery's exterior from tight battery compartments or abrasive materials.
Burnt Connectors: Evidence of burning or charring on the metal connectors within the device or charger, often accompanied by a burnt smell.
Melted Plastic: Plastic components within the battery compartment or charger melting or warping due to excessive heat.
Battery Damage: Obvious signs of damage to the battery itself, such as dents, punctures, or tears in the wrapping.

Immediate Action is Required

If you observe any of these signs in your vape mod or charger, immediately discontinue its use. Here's what you should do:

Stop Using the Device/Charger: Remove the batteries and unplug the charger immediately.
Remove Damaged Batteries: Carefully remove any damaged batteries from the device. Be extremely cautious, as damaged batteries can be unstable. Use insulated gloves, if possible, and avoid touching bare skin to the battery.
Proper Disposal: Do not discard damaged batteries in the trash! Take them to a designated battery recycling facility for proper and safe disposal.
Do Not Use Damaged Compartments: Avoid using the battery compartment in the device where damage is observed and discontinue use of any charger which displays signs of burning / melting.

Fire Safety

In the event that a battery does ignite, it's essential to know how to respond safely:

Raise the Alarm: Immediately alert those around you.
Use CO2 Fire Extinguishers: For electrical fires, which battery fires fall under, the only suitable fire extinguisher is a carbon dioxide (CO2) extinguisher. These are typically black-labeled and work by displacing oxygen, effectively smothering the fire. Do not use water or other types of fire extinguishers, as they can worsen the situation.
Evacuate if Necessary: If the fire is beyond your control, evacuate the area immediately and call emergency services.

Prevention is Key

The best way to avoid a battery fire is to prevent it from happening in the first place. Here are some preventative measures you can take:

Use the Correct Charger: Always use the charger specifically designed for your device or batteries.
Never Overcharge: Avoid leaving batteries charging unattended for extended periods.
Store Batteries Safely: Store batteries in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Ideally, use a battery case.
Stay Informed: Keep up-to-date on battery safety best practices and any safety alerts issued by manufacturers or vaping organisations.

The vaping community needs to prioritise safety and be aware of the risks associated with damaged batteries and poorly designed devices. By taking these precautions, we can help prevent potentially dangerous situations and enjoy vaping responsibly. Remember, your safety and the safety of those around you should always be the top priority.
